Historia Bolesławca EN

Historia Bolesławca EN

Our ceramic manufactory’s activities go beyond producing handmade vessels. It also involves nurturing the tradition of Bolesławiec ceramics and preserving it despite the passage of time and changing fashion. Through cooperation with important city centers, organizing cultural events, and conducting pottery workshops, we promote local products both within Poland and abroad. It is a place where tradition meets modernity, creating a unique and inspiring world of ceramic art. Here, in the heart of Bolesławiec, the ceramic industry flourishes, rooted in over three centuries of history. The preservation of artisan traditions combined with innovative approaches forms the foundation of our manufactory.

Preserving Traditions in the Ceramic Factory

Preserving Traditions in the Ceramic Factory

In our manufactory, we express deep respect and love for ceramic traditions. Here, artisans strive to preserve the spirit of historical techniques, patterns, and decorations characteristic of Bolesławiec ceramics. Passing knowledge and skills from generation to generation strengthens this extraordinary heritage. This approach encompasses the entire process of creating ceramics—from selecting high-quality clay, through shaping, glazing, to firing at high temperatures. By following these traditional methods, Bolesławiec ceramics retain their unique character and aesthetic.

Collaboration with the Museum

Manufactora in Bolesławiec works closely with the Museum of Ceramics in Bolesławiec, which for over half a century has been collecting local stoneware collections. Among over 6,000 exhibits are both unusual vessels and classic Bolesławiec products decorated with cobalt using the stamp technique. A museum curiosity is a replica of the Great Pot by Master Joppe (from 1753), once considered the largest vessel in the world (with a capacity of 2,000 liters). We warmly invite you to visit the museum!

The City of Good Jugs

The City of Good Jugs

According to historical records, the tradition of making Bolesławiec ceramics dates back to 1830. The development of pottery activity in the city was influenced by the exceptional natural resources of the surrounding area, such as rich deposits of heat-resistant clay and clay from the earth glaze group. On the other hand, its favorable geographical location at the crossroads of trade routes allowed local products to gain popularity among merchants, travelers, and elites traversing the world. The increased demand for beautiful jugs and plates made pottery the main occupation of residents, contributing to regional development and gaining fame abroad. The high quality of Bolesławiec earthenware quickly earned it the nickname “the city of good jugs.” These traditions have not faded, and even today, Bolesławiec remains a place where ceramics thrive.

Childhood is a time when a person explores the world, eagerly acquires new skills, and discovers passions. We hope that through our ceramic workshops for children, we can share our love for ceramics and its creation with the youngest. We also encourage entire families to participate, as ceramics can become a shared family passion passed down through generations. Additionally, ceramic activities for children positively influence their development: they develop imagination and artistic sensitivity, and improve manual skills. Children learn to be creative, design their own works, and bring their ideas to life. Creating ceramics also requires precision and patience, making it an excellent exercise for young participants. Such activities can also be relaxing and calming—not only for children. And the pride of making a handmade vessel is priceless.

Ceramics Festival

Once a year, in the second half of August, Bolesławiec transforms into a giant ceramic festival. Colorful parades of costumed performers, often covered in clay, along with fun, concerts, exhibitions, ceramic workshops, and many other attractions engage residents and attract increasingly larger groups of tourists. Local artists showcase their works. Bolesławiec simply becomes a huge ceramic workshop. Beyond the annual ceramics celebration, the Bolesławiec Manufactory hosts many other events that provide opportunities to create and learn about the history of ceramics. We organize ceramic workshops, exhibitions, and meetings with artists. We warmly invite you!
